Several progressively responsible leadership positions are available to nurses based
on previous performance, individual drive and initiative and promotability.
Charge Nurse
In this entry-level leadership role, the Registered Nurse has responsibility for
the quality and continuity of patient care during their assigned shift. The Charge
Nurse also serves as a role model for fellow staff members.
Assistant Nurse Manager
This role provides leadership in the delivery of care and nursing practice within
the clinical unit, accepting direct shift responsibility for the quality and continuity
of patient care. The Assistant Nurse Manager serves as a role model and resource
for the unit staff and their skills development. BSN degree preferred.
Clinical Nurse Manager
This role has 24-hour responsibility for providing leadership in the delivery of
care and nursing practice on a specified unit. In addition to serving as a role
model and resource, the Clinical Nurse Manager also develops unit activities that
support quality and service excellence. Requires the minimum of a BSN degree, with
an MSN preferred.
Administrative Nurse Manager
This position has responsibility for providing 24-hour leadership in the delivery
of care and nursing practice both on the clinical unit and within the organization.
The Administrative Nurse Manager is a mentor to the Clinical Nurse Managers, guiding
them in the development of their skills and capabilities. Requires the minimum of
a BSN degree, with an MSN preferred.
Clinical Nurse Director
This highly visible role has 24-hour responsibility for the management of two or
more patient care units within a specialized area, with accountability for continuous
quality improvement and research support for clinical studies. The Clinical Nurse
Director also leads/directs patient care delivery systems, prepares/implements the
annual departmental budget, shares knowledge of current trends and practices, assists
with instruction of student nurses, and facilitates communication between nursing
and other medical staff. Requires an MSN degree, or BSN with relevant Master’s degree.
Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)
The ultimate achievement in nursing leadership is this position which is responsible
for the planning and delivery of patient care services and the representation of
all nurses and nursing practices within the organization. The role assumes 24-hour
responsibility for the quality of patient care and continuous organizational performance
improvement within assigned nursing areas and patient populations. The CNO is also
expected to participate at the executive level in terms of strategic and long-range
planning, as well as the deployment of the Florida Hospital mission, vision, values
and elements of extending excellence. Requires an MSN degree, or BSN with relevant
Master’s degree.
