• Neuro Surgical Unit (NSU)
This 39-bed surgical remote telemetry unit cares for patients who have undergone complicated spinal and brain surgeries, including those requiring advanced seizure monitoring. We are the region’s busiest spinal unit, performing over 1,300 complex spinal surgeries each year. The NSU operates within an open unit environment with access to cutting-edge technologies like Gamma Knife® radiosurgery, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and interventional neuroradiology.
• Cardiovascular Surgery
Named America’s Heart Hospital by MSNBC, Florida Hospital Orlando specializes in the treatment of high acuity cardiac patients and performs the most open-heart surgeries in the state. We are active in prominent clinical trials, have a world-class endovascular harvest program, and benefit from high-definition thoracoscopic and off pump cardiovascular equipment. Minimally invasive valve and coronary artery bypass surgeries are conducted when possible, complementing our other advanced work in valve repair and replacement, MAZE procedure, defibrillator implants, stenting, abdominal aortic and ascending arch aneurysms, and carotid endarterectomies. Cardiovascular nurses collaborate with a generous support staff including an anesthesia tech, surgery aide and surgery tech. CNOR exam reimbursement is available to those who wish to certify their skills.
• Fracture Care Surgery
The Fracture Care Center specializes in treating complex orthopaedic traumas, in a state-of-the-art setting. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we specialize in deformity correction, limb salvage, bone infection, reconstructive surgery, joint replacement, orthopaedic trauma and other comprehensive procedures. Our expert team works on a 12-hour and Baylor shift program, with flexible rotations.
• General Surgery
With 22 surgical suites, this high-tech unit offers exposure to cardiovascular (open heart), neurology, orthopaedic, gynecology, laparoscopy, plastic, pediatric, ENT, dental and transplantation surgeries. Nurses work in tandem with surgeons, anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and others, while learning to scrub and circulate in a state-of-the-art setting. Education is a major focus on the unit, with bi-monthly in-services, OR internship and liver-transplant programs available. Nurses are preferred to have at least one year of OR and/or scrub experience, along with current BLS/ACLS.
• Short-Stay Procedures/Rapid-In-and-Out (RIO)
This unit provides general pre and post operative care to Med/Surg patients that are to be discharged within 24 hours of admission.
• Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU)
Our 25-bed PACU offers the opportunity to become an expert in many procedures and technologies including airway management, extubation, aerosol treatment, phlebotomy, ICP monitoring, isolation techniques, central line placement, ICP, nebulizer treatments, venipuncture and robotics. It’s a high-tech unit equipped with bedside monitors, omniflow pumps, plum pumps, PCA, ventilators, tough books and epidural pumps. We offer 6-8 week orientation (depending on experience, along with a four-tiered professional practice ladder). Nurses can advance to relief charge, preceptor or mentor positions, and also choose to join code blue and retention committees.
• Pre-Op and Discharge Surgical Unit (PODS)
This is a new 36-bed, team environment where nurses provide pre-surgical evaluations, determine patient readiness for a safe surgery, and help to expedite efficient discharge time. The PODS unit extends the opportunity for heavy patient and family interaction, along with the chance to experience the front end of the kidney and liver transplant process. We also offer supportive management and flexible shifts, including Baylor.
• Outpatient Surgery Unit
We are a hospital-based unit with eight OR suites and a diverse patient population ranging from newborn to geriatric. Our work includes scheduling, admission, preparation of the patient, anesthesia services, surgical procedure, PACU Phase I and II recovery, and discharge. Our nurses are integral to supporting family involvement with aftercare education, referrals and follow-up contact. Flexible shifts and rotations available.
