The Surgical Services department at Florida Hospital East Orlando consists of several patient-focused units dedicated to different aspects of the surgery process. The entire department is team driven, with emphasis on the patient experience and efficiency of care. The ability to achieve both physician and patient satisfaction is an important goal here. Surgical Services units include:
• Surgery
This is a four-bed OR providing both inpatient and outpatient care for general surgery, orthopaedics, ENT, urology, gynecology, podiatry, and ophthalmology services. We look for nurses with proven OR skills, strong clinical expertise and critical thinking abilities. There is no floating on this unit; however, there is rotating call. Clinical ladder is also available for surgical techs on this unit.
• Pre-Admission Services
Pre-admission testing and screening is conducted in a three-room clinic area, which is open Monday through Friday, from 6:30am to 5pm. Interviews and pre-op treatment are conducted in private exam rooms, with a nurse to patient ratio of 1:1.
A health unit coordinator assists with chart preparation, physician communication and appointment scheduling. Nurses must have strong teaching skills, good communication abilities, and previous surgical background.
• Perianesthesia
Our 11-bed PACU unit handles all patients requiring observation before and after receiving anesthesia care. We look for nurses with strong clinical expertise and critical thinking skills, who are available for rotating call and willing to float phase II PACU, endoscopy and pre-admission testing.
• Endoscopy/Pain Medicine
This is a fast-paced, 12-bed area with four treatment rooms dedicated to inpatient and outpatient endoscopy procedures. The unit operates Monday through Friday, along with a Pain Medicine Clinic where treatments are available two days per week.
Our endoscopy team also conducts 24/7 emergent endoscopy procedures at the bedside, as needed for patients in the ER or Critical Care. We work closely with endoscopists to provide high-quality, efficient care while maintaining emphasis on the patient experience.
Recent upgrades to the unit include high-definition monitors in the endoscopy suites, and EBUS equipment to facilitate early diagnosis of thoracic lesions. Endoscopy nurses must have strong clinical expertise and critical thinking skills, along with the willingness to float and take rotating call.
• Same-Day Surgery
We are a 22-bed outpatient care area providing same-day services, as well as support for patients requiring IV therapy, blood transfusions and complex dressing changes. We look for nurses with strong clinical expertise and critical thinking skills, who are available for rotating call and willing to float to endoscopy and pre-admission testing.
