Florida Hospital East Orlando has four Medical/Surgical/Telemetry Units to serve adult patients throughout our fast-growing community. Each day, we see a variety of diagnoses including diabetes, pneumonia, minor surgeries, abdominal pain, congestive heart failure, hip fractures, GI bleeds, renal failure, chest pain and other medical conditions.
Each unit is comprised of a combination of private and semi-private patient rooms, for a total of 121 Med/Surg beds. Units are designed for optimal efficiency, with patient rooms on the perimeter and work areas in the center (i.e. nutrition, medication, utility rooms). Available technology includes laptop and desktop computers for electronic documentation needs, accucheck machines, IV pumps and PYXIS. Everything we do here is focused on patient satisfaction and safety.
Med/Surg will be expanding to include 40 additional surgical and oncology beds in the future. Meanwhile, we are implementing a Clinical Team Nursing care delivery model that provides for Registered Nurses, Patient Care Techs, and Health Unit Coordinators on every shift. Professionals who succeed here are adaptable and flexible, with excellent interpersonal communication skills and an innate ability to anticipate patient needs.
Shared governance is also important to our ability to do the best work possible, and nurses are encouraged to participate in the Nurse Practice Council. Each unit focuses on its relevant issues, with representatives on several committees such as AMI/CHF disease team, Falls Committee, service team and more. Participation in our Professional Practice Program is also supported, as we want our Med/Surg nurses to grow and advance right along with our hospital.
The unit does require that nurses work every other weekend, as well as one major and one minor holiday each year. Occasional floating to similar units will also be expected based on census.
