Our Oncology unit has 36 large, state-of-the-art private rooms with cardiac monitoring capability, which were designed with direct input from the clinical staff. We primarily treat an adult patient population, offering care to both inpatients and outpatient chemotherapy recipients. Average length of stay is approximately four days, although with repeated admissions we are able to build close relationships with our patients and their families. The tenets of Christian compassion and kindness guide our work within this supportive environment.

The Oncology staff consists of a nurse manager, assistant nurse managers, charge nurses, registered nurses, patient care techs, five nurse techs, and health unit coordinators. Team members are OCN certified and active in ONS. Our nurse to patient ratio is 1:4, with care based on a team nursing model. Computerized charting and online self-scheduling are also important features of this unit.

We look for experienced Oncology nurses, who can work every other weekend and are willing to float when the unit census is low. Preference is given to flexible, team players with strong critical thinking skills and the ability to embrace our grassroots approach to problem solving.

Nurses are encouraged to attend both monthly tumor boards and Nurse Practice Council meetings. Over 90% of the nurses on the unit participate in the career ladder. Many also participate in educational and development programs, such as:

  • Professional Practice Program
  • Critical Care Nurse Internship Program
  • Precepting
  • Chemo Certification
