Our newly renovated multi-system ICU is a self-scheduling unit with 28 beds, open visiting hours and an average length of stay of three days. We are an interdisciplinary team that cares for a broad spectrum of diagnoses including septic shock, acute brain attack, thoracotomy, vented respiratory failure, acute renal failure and frequent multiple co-morbidities. We anticipate an increase in the volume of surgical patients on the ICU unit, in 2009, in conjunction with the opening of the new surgery suite at our location.

The nurse to patient ratio is 1:2, with a primary nursing care model.Health Unit Coordinators assist with completing doctors’ orders and administrative tasks. Our Medical Director is a pulmonary intensivist, with specialized ICU training. The unit also features the resources of a Nurse Manager, four Assistant Nurse Managers, and a team of Spiritual Ambassadors.

Our ICU also has an active Rapid Response Team that is responsible for providing direct and indirect total nursing care. These nurses respond to requests asking for intervention in the evaluation of the adult patient experiencing unresolved signs and/or symptoms of physiologic instability or otherwise of concern. Overall, the ICU has a very close-knit team culture, and celebrates our successes together.

ICU nurses are required to work every other weekend and float to the PCU when ICU census is low. RNs must be flexible team players, with previous experience and strong critical-thinking skills.

New experienced RNs who join our ICU receive a four-week precepted orientation, along with ongoing opportunities for continued learning and growth. Nurses are also encouraged to participate in AACN, gain CCRN credentialing and explore in-house educational opportunities including:

  • Grow Your Dreams Program
  • Critical Care Nurse Internship Program
  • Precepting
  • Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump
  • Neuro-Muscular Blockade

There is also opportunity for participation in a number of committees, including Nurse Practice Council (research projects), equipment, multidisciplinary rounds, central line associated bloodstream infection, and collaborative practices in diabetic, wound and critical care.
